Forestry & Land Management

In Action

DF Development understands the responsibility we have to be good stewards of the land, and good neighbors to nearby communities.

We buy land where we would want to live, hire local stewards to manage it responsibly until it’s restored to its natural balance, and then find new residents who also recognize the value of sustainable forestry and land management practices.

The DF Development family is committed to reforestation, planting tens of thousands of trees every year to renew the forests of the Central Idaho Timberlands. We’re serious about preventing further damage to the ecosystem from years of unmonitored abuse, dumping, and poaching. We love Idaho and our neighbors, and we’re building a legacy of protecting the land for generations to come.

DF Development-Managed Idaho Land

Our Idaho office manages more than 175,000 acres of prime timber and raw waterfront land in Idaho. We’ve developed partnerships with state and local authorities to make sure we’re implementing forestry and land management best practices. We support the responsible reforestation and sustainable management of Idaho’s wild lands, and we work with local groups with a vested interest in wildlife conservation and wildfire prevention.

“Our humble beginnings inspire our dedication to the land, enhancing our community and preserving a legacy for future generations.” – JW, DF Development Founder

Our Eco-Friendly Forestry and Land Management Practices

Our local efforts focus on restoring the forest and its biodiversity while preserving soil quality and water resources. This is a quick list of some of our activities, performed in Idaho and anywhere we buy land in the interest of responsible land stewardship:

Sustainable Forest Silviculture

We use sustainable timber harvesting and forestry management techniques to prioritize the long-term health of the forest and local biodiversity. We also replant trees to ensure the forest continues to grow and thrive. Our primary forest management activities include forest thinning, prescribed fire, and strategic replanting of native trees and other flora.

Preserving Wildlife Habitat

We work to preserve wildlife habitats by creating wildlife corridors and protecting sensitive areas from development.

Restoring Watersheds

Our initial and ongoing work on the land includes reducing soil erosion, improving water quality, and restoring natural vegetation in riparian areas.

Research and Development

Our company invests in research and development to identify new and innovative land restoration practices that can be applied to the land we manage.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

Our team reduces carbon emissions by practicing sustainable forest management, which helps to sequester carbon in the forest.

Conservation Easements

Another “first step” when we purchase land is the strategic placement of conservation easements on our properties to ensure those areas are protected from development and that the land will be used for conservation purposes.

Community Outreach

We are engaging with the community to raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable land management practices, and to be transparent about how we’re helping to preserve Idaho’s natural areas.

Invasive Species Management

We understand the importance of managing invasive species. We implement invasive identification and removal plans for our properties, which helps to support thriving native plant and animal populations.

To date, DF Development has successfully restored more than 30,000 acres of forest and riparian land that had been treated poorly by people. Our goal is to restore the land, protect it from further damage, and support state and local agencies in their public education efforts. We’re committed to developing these Idaho timberlands into thriving, growing, sustainable communities that honor and enhance the natural environment.
